Dr. Karen R. Hitchcock
Dr. Karen R. Hitchcock is Principal and Vice Chancellor
of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario,
Canada. She was appointed Principal July 1, 2004 having served as President
of the University at Albany, State University of New York, from 1996-2004(and
as interim president from 1995-1996).
Prior to assuming the presidency, she served as the Vice
President of Academic Affairs from 1991 to 1995. Before joining the University
at Albany in 1991, Dr. Hitchcock served as Vice Chancellor for Research,
Dean of the Graduate College, Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology, and
Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago
(1987-1991) and Assoicate Dean for Basic Sciences, Research and Graduate
Studies at Texas Tech University Health Science Center (1985-1987). Dr.
Hitchcock spent the largest part of her career at Tufts University (1970-1985)
and served as the George A. Bates Professor and Chair of the Department
of Anatomy and Cellular Biology of the Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine,
Veterinary Medicine and the Sackler Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. Hitchcock received her B.S. in Biology from St. Lawrence
University and her Ph.D. in Anatomy from the University of Rochester, School
of Medicine and Dentistry.
Dr. Hitchcock has published extensively in her research
field of cell and developmental biology and has received numerous grants
from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She has also been appointed
to numerous NIH study sections, review panels and advisory committees including
the National Advisory Research Resources Council. Additionally, Dr. Hitchcock
was awarded the prestigious NSF Visiting Professorship for Women in Science
and Engineering. Dr. Hitchcock has served as President of her professional
society, The American Association of Anatomists, and completed two terms
as a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners She has also been
named a Fellow of the State Academy for Public Administration (SAPA). In
Illinois, she was appointed to the Governor's Science Advisory Committee,
and was subsequently elected to its Executive Committee. She also was appointed
to Mayor Daley's Economic Development Commission of the City of Chicago.
Dr. Hitchcock has also served as Chair of the Council on Academic Affairs
of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges,
and as a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities
- National Faculty Policy Review Council. She has served as Chairperson
of the Capital Region's 1997 and 1998 American Heart Walks, Chair of the
Capitol Region Business Hall of Fame (1999), as Co-Chair of the Albany
Capital City Bicentenary Commission, and as Chair of the Albany-Colonie
Regional Chamber of Commerce. She has won numerous awards over the course
of her career, including the "Women of Excellence in Management, Public
Sector" Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Envoy Salute from
the Albany-Colonie Chamber of Commerce, the "Community Service Award" presented
by The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary,the 2002 Marketer Executive Citizen
of the Year Award from the Sales and Marketing Executives of Eastern New
York, the "William Golub Tikkun Olam (healing the world) Award" from the
United Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, the "Heart of Gold Award"
from the American Heart Association and the Special Recognition Award of
the Capital Region Business Review.
Dr. Hitchcock has been active on a number of Boards including
the Chicago Technology Park, the Executive Committee of the Board of the
National Association of Biomedical Research, and Albank Financial Corporation,
and was President of the Board of Directors of the Capital Region Information
Service of New York (CRISNY), and is a member of the Board of Directors
of Charter One Financial, Inc., The State University of New York Research
Foundation, the State University of New York Center on Russia and the United
States, the New York Business Development Corporation, The Public Policy
Institute of the New York State Business Council, The Center for Economic
Growth (Chair), the Albany Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce, The Becker
Foundation (Honorary), St. Peter's Hospital, the Doane Stuart School, and
Cardiomag Imaging. She has also served as Vice Chair of the New York State
Advisory Council on Higher Education. Dr. Hitchcock was a 2004 inductee
of the Capital Region Business Hall of Fame, received the 2004 Woman in
the Media Award from the Women's Press Club of New York State, and in 2004
was granted honorary doctoral degrees from Albany Medical College and her
alma Mater, St. Lawrence University.
